Ditching the clinical white, grey and black hues of the first film, this movie embraces a rich colour palette from the clear blue skies of Hoth to the magic hour sunset glow of Bespin. Much of the credit must go to ILM for adding something new to the technical wizardry of their visual effects work - artistry. Finally, Empire easily tops the list as the most beautiful science-fiction/fantasy movie ever made. ![]() Its biggest battle is at the beginning, its smallest at the end and, in between, darkness reigns and twisted revelations emerge, turning genre convention and audience expectations on their heads, and all leading to the greatest cliffhanger ending ever! Next up, the score, which easily ranks as one of John Williams' finest, and plays like one vast sweeping symphony, especially when heard independently of the movie. Firstly, and most importantly, it's one of the most audacious sequels in cinema history - consigning classic Hollywood structure to the garbage masher.
